Topic: Adam And Eve StoryGenesis 2:8-3:24

Then in Eden, in the East, the Lord God planted a garden and put the man he had formed there. He created all sorts of beautiful trees and produced good fruit there. The tree which gives life and the tree which gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad stood in the middle of the garden. A stream flowed into Eden, watering the garden, dividing it into four rivers beyond Eden. The Pishon is the first river; it flows through Havilah’s country. (There is pure gold and also scent and precious stones.) The second river is the Gihon; it flows through the land of Cush. The third river is the Euphrates, the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. Then in the Garden of Eden the Lord God placed the man to cultivate and guard it. He said, “You can eat the fruit of any tree in the garden except the tree that gives knowledge of good and bad. You don’t have to eat that tree’s fruit; if you do, you’ll die that same day.” Then the Lord God said, “Living alone is not good for the man. I’m going to make the right companion to help him.” So he took some soil from the ground and made all the animals and birds. Then he brought them to the man to see what he was going to call them; and that’s how their names were all given. The man named all the birds and all the animals, but not one of them was an appropriate companion to help him. Then the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and he took out one of the man’s ribs while he was sleeping and closed the flesh. He formed a woman and brought her to him from the rib. The man then said, “Finally, here’s one of my own kind—Bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh. ‘Woman’ is her name because she was taken out of the man.” That’s why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes one with his wife.

Both the man and the woman were naked, but not embarrassed. Now the snake was the most astute animal made by the Lord God. The snake asked the woman, “Did God tell you not to eat any fruit in the garden from any tree? “We can eat the fruit of any tree in the garden,” replied the woman, “except for the tree in the middle. God told us not to eat or touch the fruit of that tree; if we do, we’re going to die.” The snake answered, “It’s not true; you’re not going to die. God said that because he knows you’re going to be like God when you eat it and know what’s good and what’s bad.” The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good it would be for her to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be for her to become wise. So she took and ate some of the fruit. She then gave her husband some, and he ate it as well. They were made to understand and realize that they were naked as soon as they had eaten it; so they sewed together fig leaves and covered themselves. They heard the Lord God walking in the garden that evening, and they hid among the trees from him. But the man was called by the Lord God, “Where are you? “I heard you in the garden, he answered, I was afraid and hid from you, because I was naked.” “Who told you that you were naked? “The question of God. “Have you eaten the fruit I told you not to eat? “The man replied, ‘The woman you gave me the fruit, and I ate it.’ The Lord God asked the woman, ‘Why did you do this? “The snake tricked me to eat it,” she answered. “Then the Lord God said to the snake, “You shall be punished for this; you alone shall bear this curse of all the animals: from now on you shall crawl on your stomach, and you shall eat dust as long as you live. I’ll hate each other for you and the woman; her offspring and yours will always be enemies. Her offspring is going to crush your head and you’re going to bite the heel of her offspring.” And he said to the woman, “I’m going to increase your pregnancy trouble and your birth pain. Nevertheless, you will still have your husband’s desire, yet you will be subject to him.” And he said to the man, “You listened to your wife and ate the fruit that I told you not to eat. The ground will be under a curse because of what you’ve done. All your life you’re going to have to work hard to make it produce enough food for you. It will produce weeds and thorns, and wild plants will have to be eaten. To make the soil produce anything, you will have to work hard and sweat until you return to the soil from which you were formed. You’ve been made from soil, and you’re going to become soil again.” Adam called his wife Eve because she was the mother of all people. And the Lord God made for Adam and his wife clothes from the skins of animals, and he clothed them. The Lord God then said, “Now these people have become like one of us and know what is good and what is bad. They must not be allowed to bear fruit from the tree that gives life, eat it, and live forever.” Thus the Lord God sent them out of the Garden of Eden to cultivate the soil from which they were formed. Then he put living creatures and a flaming sword on the east side of the garden, turning in all directions. This was to prevent anybody coming close to the tree that gives life.
