Text: Deuteronomy 15:1-12 (KJV)

Key Verse: “For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land”(Deuteronomy 15:11).

MESSAGE:

It is interesting to watch how many so called philanthropists go about their work of charity. When carefully examined, one will discover that these are very careful and calculating speculators who throw their seeds of charity in fields where they expect to reap many dividends. It is not uncommon to find many politicians set up charity organizations or embark on so-called empowerment programmes where they dole out financial grants. The truth is, there are genuine givers.

The Lord, in the text sets out a principle to guide the children of Israel in their acts of charity and support for the needy. The rich and the wealthy among them were to understand that their wealth should not just be for themselves. They were to always have the less privileged among them in mind and make provision to support them.

This is the same principle expected to guide Christians’ work of charity. The privileged believers must know that they have to make constant provision for the less privileged among them. This is what Christian communion is all about. It is unchristian to expect undue interest from a personal loan given to a brother in need or turn him to become a puppet just because we have been of help to him. The principle also discourages laziness, idleness, indolence and over dependence on others for our daily needs. The Christian must display a high level of responsibility, discipline and thrift in seeking for his daily needs.

While the Christian does not make the hope of reward a motivating factor for helping his brother, his prosperity becomes liberal. God’s promise and principles remain unchanged, “The liberal soul shall be made fat…” (Proverbs 11:25). The Christian should therefore strive to do good to all men, especially to them that are of the household of faith.

Thought For The Day: Every good done shall be rewarded.
