Whatever, Wherever

FEBRUARY 22, 2022

So they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.”
Joshua 1:16

Peter Barron Stark and Jane Flaherty wrote The Only Leadership Book You’ll Ever Need about organizations where employees love to work. They opened with an important statistic. Employees with an above-average attitude toward their work will generate higher customer satisfaction, high productivity, and higher profits. “In addition, companies with higher morale (more than 70 percent) outperformed others in the same industries by 11.3 percent.”

In an even better leadership book—the Bible—we learn a similar lesson. Joshua 1:1-9 is God’s leadership message to Joshua. He commissioned him to lead Israel. In the last half of the chapter, Joshua went to the people and asked for their cooperation. They answered, “All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.”

When leaders listen to the Lord, others will listen to them. When we serve the Lord with joy, enthusiasm, and confidence, we’ll inspire others to do the same. We will all say to the Lord, “Whatever, wherever!” We’ll serve with joy!

Every leader who is also a Christian—including the manager of the widget factory, the football coach, and the public-school kindergarten teacher—needs to remember that the leadership role is a spiritual responsibility.
John MacArthur
