WALK IN THE LIGHT

“But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 (KJV)

Beloved, as believers, we have been called to walk in the light because we are already in the Kingdom of Light. Though this chapter addresses the unbelievers, verse 7 addresses the state of believers. Hence, it started with the word “but”. The believer has been delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the Kingdom of light. We are already in the light as believers. And as we continue to walk in the light of what Christ has done on our behalf, we are under what is like a waterfall of the blood of Jesus. The word ‘cleanses’ in the text is a present-continuous tense. In other words, daily, you are being cleansed.

1 John 2:1 again addresses the believer: “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not…” (KJV). That is the life of a believer. You don’t go and make a practice of sin. As you appreciate the grace of God, you will not sin. “…And if any man sin…” There is a possibility to sin. The challenge is that we classify sin. So, we have big sin and small sin. But the truth is that sin is sin. If you are angry with somebody or worry, you have sinned. If you talk badly of somebody, you have sinned. If sin must be judged, then sin is sin, either small or big.

God understands our nature as humans and knows we are trying to live for Him. But even with all our efforts, we still live in sin’s presence. However, we should not live habitually in sin. That was why Apostle Paul asked the question: Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? And straightway answered: God forbid. But when we fall into sin because of what Jesus did for us at the cross, we can come boldly before God, knowing that the price has been paid. That is why we should appreciate the Cross because Jesus settled the issue of sin on the cross.
