HOW JESUS HANDLED THE FLESH

Matthew 26:40-41, Luke 22:41-42

And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith…What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. *And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

Jesus loved God and pleasing Him above the flesh was the driving force of His life. We can clearly see this in how Jesus responded to the temptations the devil threw at him in Luke 4:1-13. Jesus knew and declared the word of God to overcome the temptations of the flesh. Jesus gave Himself a lot to prayer and fellowshipping with God. Submitting to God empowers us to resist and overcome the devil, (James 4:7). Jesus woke up very early to pray (Mark 1:35) and sometimes, He continued all night in prayer to God, (Luke 6:12).

When His fame was spreading and His ministry activities were increasing, He did not allow that distract Him and make Him raise His shoulders in pride. He still withdrew Himself often to pray, (Luke 5:15-16, NIV). When some people wanted to take Him and force Him to be their king, Jesus perceived it and left to a mountain, probably to pray (John 6:15).Jesus did not do whatever He wanted to do, (John 5:19). He was always committed to doing what the Father wanted Him to do, even when it was not convenient for the flesh.

It is very comforting to know that Jesus also had to face the challenge of making His Spirit dominate the flesh, and just as He was victorious in dominating the flesh by yielding to the Spirit, you also will be victorious by His mighty grace and ability in you, (Heb.4:14-16).

Prayer:
Father, I thank you that the same ability that Jesus had to dominate the flesh is also in me. Help me to dominate my flesh.
