THE HOUSEHOLD OF CHRIST

Hebrews 3:5-6 (LB)

Well, Moses did a fine job working in God’s house, but he was only a servant; and his work was mostly to illustrate and suggest those things that would happen later on. But Christ, God’s faithful Son, is in complete charge of God’s house. And we Christians are God’s house—he lives in us!—if we keep up our courage firm to the end, and our joy and our trust in the Lord.

If you study the scriptures carefully, you will notice a very big distinction God makes between the children of Israel and those who believe in Christ. Though there are a few places where God refers to the children of Israel as His sons/children, they are mostly referred to as God’s servants. The only reason the children of Israel were called God’s children, was because God chose them to be His people, (Deut. 7:6). On the other hand, the reason we are called God’s children is because we are born of God (John 1:12-13). We have His life in us. By our faith in Christ, we have been translated into God’s kingdom (Col.1:13), and Jesus Himself said, the least of us in the kingdom is greater than John the Baptist and all who were before him, (Matt.11:11)

Moses did everything he did as a servant, and his work was merely as a shadow or symbol pointing to something greater. On the other hand, Jesus did everything He did as a Son. The word ‘house’ in our text above, refers to a household or family. We are the household Christ came to raise (the family of the Son) – the church of the firstborn (Heb.12:23). We are the work of Christ. What God did through Moses and the Israelites was merely a shadow/symbol of what God had planned to do through Christ and us. Keep your faith in Christ and remain joyful and hopeful of the greater things God will do in your life.

Prayer:
Father, thank you for making me a member of the household of Christ. Thank you that I experience greater and more glorious things.
