CENTRAL THOUGHT:
In a world full of challenges, Christ assures the believer of His peace.

TOPIC:
PEACE AMID TRIBULATION 2

TEXT: Jn 14:18-31; 16:22-33

INTRODUCTION:
Chaos and insecurity are dominant features of the world in these present times. The situation is such that many governments appear to be at crossroad meeting their core responsibilities of securing lives and properties as well as ensuring peaceful co-existence among the citizenry. The prevailing economic circumstances across the land are causes of great apprehension. The Lord Jesus forwarned the believers “in the world ye shall have tribulations”, but there was also the assurance of peace come what may. We experience times of difficulties that produce sorrowful memories but we have a comforting promise of peace from Jesus Christ. This study focuses on how to abide in the peace, made available by God amidst prevailing challenges

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
The objective of this lesson are to:

Appreciate how to maintain peace amid tribulation and
Know the provisions made available for the disciples in a world of tribulations

BIBLE TRUTH:
QUESTION 1. DOES THE PEACE OF GOD COME BY DEFAULT ? (Jn 14:23; Isa 26:3)
After the new birth experience, there is a measure of peace that one gets from being translated from the kingdom of darkness into that of light (Col 1:13). It gives the assurance of peace with God (Rom 5:1). Thereafter, as the believer grows, he/she is expected to grow into the knowledge of the full benefits available to him. With this understanding, the believer has to intentionally lay hold on promises/covenants recorded in His word. This include the place of peace amid tribulation. In challenging times, a believer is to lay hold on the specific word of God and depend on Him for the performance/actualization of the word in the believer’s life. He/she must believe the word of God. In addition, such an individual needs to pray the word of God until it becomes in his/her life

QUESTION 2. DISCUSS IN PRACTICAL TERMS HOW TO ENJOY PEACE IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES 1Pt 5:7; Psa 55:22
It is possible to enjoy peace in all circumstances. There is a measure of peace with God, which is freedom from the guilt of sin and death. To enjoy peace, the believer must study the word of God and apply it in appropriate situations. The believer should be devoted to God, prayerful and surround him/herself with the right people (1Corin 15:33), get godly counsel if need be, resolve to absolutely trust God (not having an alternative to God) and above all, must rest and totally depend on the Holy Spirit.

QUESTION 3. WHAT ARE THE ROLE OF THE UNDER LISTED IN ENSURING PEACE FOR THE DISCIPLES IN A CHAOTIC WORLD OF TRIBULATION ?
I. THE WORD OF GOD (Jn 14:25; Isa 55:10-11). The word of God is true and cannot fail. The place of the word of God is key if a believer must have peace in this world of tribulation. The believer must read/listen to it and believe it, pray it, meditate on it. In doing the above, the believer is guaranteed peace in the midst of trouble.
II. OBEDIENCE (Jn 14:21-23). Jesus equated to His word as loving Him. The place of obedience is paramount it the believer must enjoy peace in all circumstances. He/she must be obedient to the word of God. Deut 28:1 is apt on the blessedness of obeying the word of God.
III. PRAYER (Jn 16:22-24). Asking the Father in the name of Jesus, guarantees peace. Prayers therefore is an important tool of the believer if he must know peace. Tell God about the situation and how you feel and stop spending valuable time crying and complaining. All believers have access to God and we all can talk to God in the name of Jesus and be sure He will answer us (Heb 4:16)
IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT (Jn 14:26). The Holy Spirit is our comforter in the midst of turbulence. He is the voice of God to the believer, a total dependence on Him assures peace in a world of tribulation.
V. FAITH (Jn 14:27-29). To enjoy peace amidst tribulation, the believer must have faith i n God. The place of faith cannot be overemphasized. A simple believe and trust in the ability of God to do what He says He will do, is vital to enjoy the peace. Christ has given the believer an assurance of this peace. Hebrew 11 is full of people of faith who dare to trust God. God is moved by faith and will help those who in sincerity of heart turn to Him.

QUESTION 4. WHAT ARE THE BENFITS OF ABIDING IN THE PEACE THAT GOD GIVES ?
The benefits of abiding in the peace of God is numerous. When an individual is at peace, he is happy, and it enable one to be joyful amidst challenges. It breeds in the believer the assurance that God will surely intervene/show up, thereby causing growth in the believer’s faith and walk with God. Each time we overcome a particular situation our faith in God increases, when we experience God’s peace, we are free from worries and anxieties and their effects on our health. This ultimately culminates in a long life for the individual, and the hope of spending eternity with God is assured

DAILY LIVING APPLICATION:
In a trouble-filled world, Jesus prayed God not to take the believers from the world but to keep the believers from evil (Jn 17:15). God has not assured us of a world free from challenges, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivers him from all of them” (Psa 34:19). Believers should hand over all their fears, anxieties and concern to God. He will surely respond to us as we call out to Him in persistent prayers and faith (1Pt 5:7-10)

MEMORY VERSE:
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world”
