TEXT: PS 100:1-5

INTRODUCTION:
Thanksgiving is a way of showing gratitude and appreciation to God for what He has done, what He is doing
and what He will do for us. Thanksgiving should be done with
gladness of heart. The act of thanksgiving to God is an indication
that we are depending on Him, as our
Creator, Lord and Saviour.
God is worthy of our thanks and will do much more for us as we appreciate Him.

LESSON OBJECTIVES
At the end of this study, we trust God to help us to:

  1. understand the meaning of being thankful;
  2. discuss why we should be thankful unto Him:
  3. know how we should be thankful:
  4. understand when we should be thankful:

BIBLE TRUTH:
Q1. WHAT DO WE MEAN BY “BE THANKFUL”?
It is to be full of thanks. It is a word that expresses either a feeling or show of gratitude. In the context of this study, to be thankful, means to show gratitude to God.

Q2. WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY “BE THANKFUL UNTO HIM AND BLESS HIS NAME” ?
As earlier said, our gratitude in the context of this study is to God; therefore, to be thankful unto Him means to show appreciation to God. To bless His name means to magnify, exalt, honour and glorify God.
The believer’s gratitude to God
should not be dependent on the
prevailing circumstances he/she is going through. The lifestyle of the believer should be that of
thanksgiving. The believer should be thankful for the salvation of his/her soul, for the mercies of God, and for the benefits in Christ. Being thankful
is the expression of our gratitude,
trust and faith in God

  1. WHY SHOULD WE BE THANKFUL
UNTO HIM AND BLESS HIS NAME (Ps
    100:1-5)
The following are some of the
reasons why we should be thankful unto God and bless His holy name:
    a. It is a command, therefore we
    should obey accordingly. (Ps 136:1; 1Chron. 16:8).
    b. Because of whom He is. God is
good (Ps. 118:1), faithful (Lam.3:22-23), merciful (Heb.
    4:16), powerful (1 Chron. 29:11).
    C. For what He has done.
Scripture is full of several reasons why we should give thanks, this include: His benefits (love, mercy, salvation, deliverance, protection,
    provisions. (Ps 103:1-22)
    d. For what He has done, is doing
and He will do? (Hcb. 13:8)
    e. His mercy is everlasting(Ps 100:5, Ps 136:1-end)
    f. Isa sacrifice that truly honours Him (Ps. 50:23; Heb. 1 3:15).
    The class should mention others.
  2. HOW SHOULD WE BE THANKFUL UNTO HIM AND BLESS HIS NAME? (Ps 100: 1-2,4)
It is expected that the believer
expresses his/her gratitude to God. Below are some of the ways
    a. believer can express his/her
    thankfulness and bless the Lord.
    Presenting ourselves holy and
    acceptable unto God. (Rom.12:1).
    b. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord. (Ps. 100:1-4), and serve the Lord with gladness (Ps.122:1).
    c. Come into His presence with
    singing, shouting and
    worshipping (fruits of our lips)
    (Heb. 13:15).
    d. Presenting substance to God.
such as: gifts, offerings, donations and act of kindness.(Deut. 16:17; Col.3:12;Matt.25:35-45).
    Come before Him in humility.
    (Lk. 17:15-16; James.4:6:;Jn.3:27).
    The class should mention others.

O5. WHEN SHOULD WE BE
THANKFUL UNTO HIM AND BILESS HISNAME?
There is no spelt out time in which one should be thankful and bless God’s name. The believer should be thankful always and in all circumstances, irrespective of prevailing situations. (1 Thess. 5:18).
With regard to time, Scripture has not limited the believer to a specific time wherein he/she should give thanks. We can give thanks to God, out of gratitude for deliverance, preservation,
provisions and protection, just as
Abraham and Noah built altars of
thanksgiving out of gratitude for what God did for them. In Exo. 15:19-21 Miriam and women of Israel danced and sang unto the Lord for victory.
The believer should seize every
opportunity to be thankful to God. It should not be with only substance but, with our entire life. The believer should also cultivate the habit of thanking God with the fruit of his lips-
learn to say “Thank you Jesus” let it become a part ofyour life.
Another time the believer should
thank God is where a congregation schedules a specific date to thank God e.g. midyear or annual thanksgiving.
The believer should see it as a
privilege and an opportunity to give thanks. Believers can as a household or family still set out time to thank God. The totality of our lives should be an expression of thankfulness to God.

DAILY LIVING APPLICATION:
Gratitude should be cultivated by
the believer as part of his everyday life style. The reasons why we should thank God have been outlined. The believer should be intentional about
thanking God for everything
irrespective of the circumstances. Our thanksgiving must commence with living a holy and acceptable life before God. Singing, shouting, serving
the Lord and giving substances which have no blemish are some of the ways we can express our gratitude to God.
Thankfulness should be expressed always so do not wait until the church sets out a specific date for thanksgiving.

His holy name”.
