HYMN: S.S & S 115 “When I survey the wondrous cross

CENTRAL THOUGHT:
The death and resurrection of Christ covers all the consequences of the broken law

TOPIC:
THE BENEFITS OF THE DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST

TEXT:
Col 2:14-15

INTRODUCTION:
God undertook the redemption of man by sending His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die in man’s place. Christ, as God’s perfect substitute, has met the demands of the law, paying the redemptive price for man who is condemned to death for breaking God’s law. No sinner can be acquitted except he/she accept Christ as his/her redeemer. The benefits of Christ’s death and resurrection is not limited to removal of guilt, it covers all consequences of the broken law which are sicknesses, diseases and satanic oppression.
Christ has paid the price on the cross of Calvary, He declared; “IT IS FINISHED”. From this study we shall examine the eternal purpose of the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

LESSON OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this study are:

  1. To know why the crucifixion of Christ took place during the Passover
  2. Know why Christ had to die on the cross of Calvary
  3. Understand the benefits of Christ’s death and resurrection and
  4. Know how to appropriate the benefits to our lives

BIBLE TRUTH:
QUESTION 1.
THE CRUCIFIXION OF CHRIST TOOK PLACE DURING THE FEAST OF PASSOVER; WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS ? ( Exo 12:3-14; Matt 26:1-2, 17-32; Jn 1:35-36; 1Cor 5:7)
Jesus was crucified during the Jewish annual celebration of the feast of Passover to become “the Passover for the whole world”. 1Cor 5:7b says….”even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us”. The first Passover was celebrated in Egypt by the Israelites as commanded by God. Exodus 12:13 “And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye [are]: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy [you], when I smite the land of Egypt.” At this point, God was both judging the Egyptians and fulfilling His promises to Israel (Gen 15:13)
God required ‘a lamb without blemish’ in the two PASSOVER: the first was an animal which was provided by the people (a type of what was to come) while the second and more permanent Passover (once and for all) was human JESUS CHRIST and was provided by God Himself. (Jn 1:29)”… behold the LAMB of God which taketh away the sin of the world”. This sacrifice was made for the redemption of man.

QUESTION 2A. WHY DID CHRIST HAVE TO DIE ? (Rom 5:10; Col 1:19-23; Heb 2:9-18; 9:15)
Since the fall of man in the garden of Eden, there has been a gap between God and man. This ‘God-shaped’ vacuum in the heart of man could not be satisfied by any created being unless it was God’s provision. So, Christ (God’s provision) had to die to fulfill man’s redemption. Christ’s death on the cross of Calvary sealed the redemption of the human race, no one is excluded from it. (Gen 3:15; Jn 3:16)

QUESTION 2B.
WHY WAS HIS DEATH ON A CROSS ? (Deut 21:22-23; Phil 2:5-8; 1Cor 1:17-23; Gal 3:13-14)
Christ’s death was on the cross because He was made a curse for by God to pay the penalty and bear the consequence of the sin committed by Adam and Eve in order to redeem man back to God. It is written, “curse is everyone that hangeth on a tree…” Gal 3:13

QUESTION 3
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CHRIST’S DEATH AND RESURRECTION ?

I. RECONCILIATION (Col 1:20-21; 2Cor 5:18-19). Christ had to die to reconcile man to God. The disobedience of Adam and Eve brought curse to human race and separation from the presence of God. We became His enemies. The wall of partition between us and God was broken when Jesus died on the cross. 2Cor 5:20-21

II. REDEMPTION (Eph 1:7). Christ’s death on the cross of Calvary has sealed the redemption of the human race.

III. HOPE OF RESURRECTION (1Cor 15:16-21). Believers by the death and resurrection of Christ have the same hope of being raised from the dead.

IV. BLOTTED OUT THE HANDWRITING OF ORDINANCES WRITTEN AGAINST US (Col 2:14-15). “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; [And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

V. JUSTIFICATION, ACCESS TO GOD (Rom 5:1). God sees the believers in Christ as “never sinned”. Christ had to die and set us free from the guilt and condemnation of sin.

VI. DELIVERANCE FROM SIN, SICKNESS, FEAR etc. (1Pt 2:24; Heb 2:15; 1Jn 3:8; Rom 6:6). Christ’s sacrifice offers holistic deliverance in it entirety. We obtain deliverance from sin and the devil, the arch enemy of man. 1 John 3:8″….For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil”

VII. A PERFECT SACRIFICE FOR SIN (Heb 9:9-14; 10:1-17). “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified” (Heb 10:14)

QUESTION 4.
HOW THEN CAN WE APPROPRIATE THESE BENEFITS TO OURSELVES ? (Rom 6:8-11). God gave us His best, we are also to give Him our best. First and foremost, we must accept the offer of salvation from sin which He gave by surrendering totally to Him. Secondly, we must make the commitment to be like Him in obedience to God’s command; for “he that saith hr abideth in Him, ought himself also so to walk even as He walked”. Reconciling the human race back to God was the main purpose of Christ’s ministry; it should also be our focus. The believers are the mirror reflecting the transactions of Calvary, preaching Christ crucified and His imminent appearing to take His people away.

DAILY LIVING APPLICATION
The death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ is the reason for our justification, sanctification and glorification. Our victory over sin, and the devil and the hope of eternal life rests on it. The wall of partition that serves as a hinderance to reaching God was broken down when Jesus died; giving us access to God. Whosoever comes sincerely to the Lord Jesus with genuine repentance received forgiveness of sin and is saved, sustained and secured by grace. You have a brand new identity when you give your life to Christ! Don’t let the devil rob you of these blessings Christ made possible at Calvary.
