KEEP LOOKING INTO THE PERFECT MIRROR OF THE GOSPEL

JAMES 1:25 (GNB, CEV)

But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice—you will be blessed by God in what you do. *But you must never stop looking at the perfect law that sets you free. God will bless you in everything you do, if you listen and obey, and don’t just hear and forget.

In a few verses before our text above, the Bible says anyone who is not a doer of the word is like someone who sees himself in a mirror, but after a short while, he forgets what he looks like. This shows that what makes us doers of God’s word or people who live the way God wants us to, is the right understanding and consciousness of who we really are.

For us not to lose sight of the correct image of ourselves, we must keep looking into our perfect mirror – the revelation of the Gospel of Christ. Who Christ is and the things He has done for us by His death, burial, and resurrection. One of the greatest things Christ has done for us is that He has made us just like He is, (1 John 4:17, 1Cor. 6:17). This is why He has sent us into the world just as the Father sent Him (John 20:21) and He said we can do the works He did and even greater works, (John 14:12).

The perfect law of liberty in our text above is the revelation of Christ. Ordinarily, a mirror can show you your reflection and any flaws you need to correct, but the mirror cannot correct the flaws for you. But the revelation of Christ first of all shows you a perfect reflection of yourself – who are in Christ, and the Spirit of God uses that same revelation to change you and empower you to do what is right, (2 Cor. 3:18).
