THE TWO SIDES OF WALKING IN THE SPIRIT

Galatians 5:16, 2Corinthians 3:17-18

…Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. *…let the Spirit direct your lives, and you will not satisfy the desires of the human nature. *Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

To walk in the Spirit is to live your life under the influence and leading of the Spirit of God. To walk in the Spirit also means to live by faith in Christ. Paul said to the Galatian church, “Are ye so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” (Gal.3:3). They began their walk with God in the Spirit, by putting their faith in Christ. When we’re walking in the Spirit, we’re living our lives with the consciousness that we are one with Christ and we have His life in us.

When we walk in the Spirit, there are two major things we experience: victory over sin/the flesh, and we are growing in the life of God.

Overcoming sin is not independent or a prerequisite for walking in the Spirit. It is walking in the Spirit that’s a prerequisite for overcoming sin. It is only by living by faith in Christ and under the empowerment and leading of the Spirit that we can put to death the deeds of the flesh, (Rom.8:13). The major raw material the Holy Spirit uses to empower and lead us is the revelation of Christ. The more we renew our minds with the revelation of Christ, the more the faith of Christ is stirred up in us, and the more the Spirit of God can form Christ in us. As we pray and thank God, and declare the things Christ has done for us, we grow spiritually and become more like Christ.

Prayer:
Father, help me to live in the consciousness of my oneness with Christ and help me to yield more to the leading of the Spirit.
