Topic: CONSCIENCE IN BONDAGE
Text: Genesis 42:21-22, Romans 2:12-16
Minister: Dr. Daniel Olukoya (G.O MFM Worldwide)

Genesis 42:21-22 – “And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.”

Romans 2:12-16 – “For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.”

Conscience bears witness, can correct and can guide.

Hebrews 9:13–14 – “For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

A lot of humanity suffer from conscience insanity. A man is a spirit living in the body and having a soul.

The body consist of the flesh, the bones and the blood: All these three departments can be in trouble, they can need deliverance.

The soul contains the mind, the will and the emotion: All of these can be in problem.
The Spirit man consists of the knowledge (1 Cor. 2:10-12), communication and the conscience

The problem of man can span through all the things that make up man; the body, soul and the spirit.

===> Anyone who is in trouble, as a result of pollution of body, soul and spirit, will be delivered by fire, in the name of Jesus.

===> Every dead work inside the body, the soul and the spirit, shall be evacuated by the power in the blood of Jesus.

The Spirit man consists of the knowledge, communication and the conscience. The conscience is our internal policeman.

Knowledge can be inhibited, communication can be broken and conscience can be compromised.

Every man knows God from two sources; God’s creation and man’s conscience. Creation is outside witness and conscience is inner witness.

Your conscience is a witness to the existence of God. Because of conscience, everyone who has ever lived will stand, without excuse, before God at the final judgement.

What is Conscience?

  • Conscience is a compound word composed of “con” and “science”. “Con” stands for together or in conjunction with. “Science” stands for knowledge. So, conscience is “co-knowledge”; knowledge held together with oneself and God.
  • Conscience is faculty or power of the mind by which we distinguish between right and wrong.
  • Conscience is the independent witness within us.
  • Conscience functions like a judge within us inside an internal court.
  • Conscience is the ability to sense right and wrong
  • Conscience is faculty that judges our actions and thoughts by the highest standard.
  • Conscience is the inner sense that certain things ought to be done and certain things ought not to be done.
  • Conscience is the still small voice that makes you feel smaller still.
  • Conscience is that which points us to what we ought to do.
  • Conscience is the prophetic ministry of the inner man.
  • Conscience is that which passes judgement on our thoughts, plans, actions, conducts and our attitudes.
  • Conscience is the indicator that measures the degree of agreement between our conduct and God’s standard.
  • Conscience is that, when you violate it, it will bring punishment of fear, guilt, anxiety, internal conflict, shame, internal turmoil, lack of joy and depression.
  • Conscience is the inner register which records all things done in details.
  • Conscience is the inner accuser that lodges a complaint against us when we are guilty.
  • Conscience is that inner divider that sides with us in our innocence. Rom. 2:15
  • Conscience is that inner witness that gives testimony for or against us. 2 Cor. 1:12
  • Conscience is that inner judge that condemns us or vindicates us. 1 John 3:20.
  • Conscience is that inward executioner that afflicts us with grief when guilt is dissolved. 1 Samuel. 24:5

Many mentally distorted persons could be released if they find forgiveness, their major problem is bad conscience mostly.

Why do people do terrible things and they are not disturbed? That is evil conscience, something has gone wrong with the conscience. It is sick.

TYPES OF CONSCIENCE

  1. The Bible therefore talks about weak conscience. 1 Cor. 8:7-12
  2. Wounded conscience. 1 Cor. 8:12
  3. Defiled conscience – soiled, stained conscience. 1 Cor. 8:7, 2 Cor. 7:1, Titus 1:15
  4. Evil conscience
  5. Dead conscience
  6. Swerving conscience. 1 Tim. 1:6
  7. Seared conscience. 1 Tim. 4:2
  8. Abandoned conscience. 1 Tim. 1:19

When you do what your conscience considers wrong;

  • you will have a defiled, dirty, stained and guilty conscience.
  • Such a person will not want to go to God; he or she avoids spiritual exercises.
  • When a person persists in violating his conscience again and again, the person’s conscience gets defiled.
  • When such violation of the conscience becomes a lifestyle, the conscience becomes seared as with a hot iron; it starts to lose feelings
  • The conscience will quickly lose its signaling capacity and will stop functioning as a warning system.

What you need to do if you have a bad conscience is to repent and ask God to deliver you from the evil conscience.

An evil conscience is the opposite of good conscience. It encourages one to continue when you are wrong.

Isaiah 5:20 – “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
People with conscience in bondage;

  • Substitute that which is wrong for that which is right.
  • Play with sin
  • Claim to be born again but have shallow conversion and repentance level.
  • Measure sins.
  • Argue with the truth

The conscience is God’s link with man. When other spiritual links are broken by transgression, conscience still hooks up.

If the conscience is destroyed, the last link that binds you to God is broken.

Conscience is God’s watchdog. It is housed in the human heart to bark at the approach of temptation and sin. Unless you want to deceive yourself; anytime you want to do anything bad, the conscience will say, “this is not good”.

A silent watchdog, however is worse than no dog. A dumb dog is a danger to the safety of lives and properties. A silent conscience is worse than no conscience.

It is a terrible thing to the soul’s safety in the hour of danger when your conscience, divine police dog, has kept quiet.

Conscience is God’s police dog to discover the soul’s most secret sins.

Conscience is to the soul what a window is to the house. Just like a house without a window is dark, so a soul without conscience is a dark den.

When windows are dirty, they keep out the light and cause reduction in brightness. Same thing, when the conscience is dirty, it keeps out the light and causes reduction in brightness in the inside.

Conscience is God’s protester.

Conscience is God’s lash.

Conscience is God’s sword; a sword that does not cut is no sword at all.

Conscience is the soul’s nervous system.

The soul without conscience is a nerveless mass and incapable of responding to the touch of God.

Conscience is God’s fingerprint of expressing your sins.

Conscience is God’s whispers in silence.

Conscience is God’s thermometer. Sin is fever. Conscience is the thermometer used by the Great Physician to discover how high the fear of sin has become in the soul.

Conscience is God’s barometer.

Conscience is a reliable weather prophet; it can tell us whether a man’s future will be stormy or fair. A man with guilty conscience will have a bad future.

Conscience is God’s alarm clock, it cries out when something bad has happened.

  • A blind conscience sees nothing.
  • A deaf conscience hears nothing
  • A dumb conscience says nothing
  • A thick conscience feels nothing
  • A lazy conscience does nothing
  • A confused conscience understands nothing
  • A disorganized conscience arranges nothing.
  • A floating conscience strikes on nothing.

Conscience cannot compel obedience but it speaks the language of authority. It agitates and accuses the evil doer. It pursues somebody in the crowded city. It darkens the thought as the sinner lies down asleep.

Conscience mingles with dreams

Conscience discerns the soul’s deepest secrets and reports to God, it is God’s spy.
A lot of conscience needs very serious deliverance.
