The MESSAGE:

Frugality is a virtue the Bible encourages all believers to acquire and practice. Nowadays, the culture of waste and mismanagement of resources is rampant and should be condemned in all terms. The truth is that God hates wasteful spending and use of other resources. He is frugal. The truth is that wasteful culture or lifestyle leads to poverty. The prodigal son left home with fortunes, but he soon squanders them and began to suffer hunger, lack and deprivation. Like the prodigal son, many Christians were once blessed by God with riches, wealth and other good things of life. The moment they got those things, they left God out of their lives and did their own things. They spent the money with sybaritic indulgence and on things that mattered only in this world and added nothing to their eternity. Today, many of such people have become ashes of history. They now live in abject poverty and squalor. Why? They were not frugal. No matter what God has given you, if you are not frugal in handling it, it will soon finish and you will be back to square one.

In solving a national economic problem in Egypt, one of the keys God gave Joseph was frugality. He applied this key and it worked wonders. In Genesis 41:35-36, Joseph told Pharaoh these words, “And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.” These measures were prescribed to avoid waste and overcome the famine that was going to ravage the land.

Today, there is global economic recession. In homes, workplaces, organisations and churches, the principle of frugality should be learnt and applied. Presently, organisations are seeking and applying cost cutting and waste reduction measures. This is in line with being frugal. As a believer, you should discourage waste and promote frugality. A frugal person saves for the rainy day, but the foolish spends everything (Proverbs 21:20).

Jesus Christ, our role model, also discouraged waste and encouraged frugality. When He multiplied five loaves of bread and two pieces of fish and fed over five thousand people, there were twelve baskets as left over. What did Jesus say about the leftover? John 6:12 provides the answer, “When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.” Beloved, at home, in your workplace and your church, ensure that you don’t waste or lose anything valuable. You should also correct those who waste or lose resources. Teach them to be frugal. Let nothing valuable be lost.
