Their “J” shape resembles a shepherd’s crook, used to keep sheep from straying, and can remind us that Jesus is our Good Shepherd. The red stripes can bring to mind the blood that Christ shed for us when He was wounded and bruised for us, and the white stripes can remind us of His purity.
