“Inspiration of The Scriptures”

Sunday, October 13, 2024

Key Verse

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).TEXT — 2 Timothy 3:16,17

Message

Inspiration can be described as “That supernatural influence exerted on the minds of the sacred writers by the Spirit of God, under which they unerringly declared His will….” The Scripture is the term used to refer to all the books of the Bible. Its 66 books were written by more than 40 authors, spanning over 1,800 years. Most of the authors never lived to see the writing of the other, yet there is no contradiction between any of the books. This is only made possible because the writings were all inspired by God.

Today’s passage reiterates the importance of every part of the Scriptures and its potency. God’s word was inspired to communicate instructions, show men their sins, reclaim them from unrighteous ways and direct them to the righteous path. Apostle Peter succinctly captures the inspiration of the Scriptures when he revealed, “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as the Holy Ghost moved them” (2 Peter 1:21).

Only the account of the Bible is the generally accepted fact about creation. In narrating the creation story, Moses did not refer to any other historical records, implying that his account was authentic. God commanded him to write a book: “And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book” (Exodus 17:14). He, therefore, wrote the book under the command and inspiration of God.

Scriptural inspiration is unique because it has a dual effect. Both the writer and the reader or hearer receive inspiration. While the writer is inspired to communicate the mind of God, the reader or hearer is inspired to respond to God and obey whatever He commands.

Thought for the day

The Scripture is not just another book; it is the infallible and inerrant word of God.
