TOPIC: Vanity Upon Vanity (DCLM Daily Manna 18 August 2021)

TEXT: Job 27:11-23

11 I will teach you by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.

12 Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye thus altogether vain?

13 This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.

14 If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

15 Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.

16 Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay;

17 He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

18 He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper maketh.

19 The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not.

20 Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night.

21 The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place.

22 For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.

23 Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

KEY VERSE: “He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper maketh.” – (Job 27:18)

MESSAGE:

On November 25, 1895, a cornerstone of ice was laid in Leadville, Colorado, the beginning of the largest ice palace ever built in America. In an effort to bolster the town’s sagging economy, the citizens staged a winter carnival. On New Year’s Day of 1896, the town turned out for the grand opening. The immense palace measured 450 x 320 feet. The towers that flanked the entrance were 90 feet high. Inside was a 16,000-square-foot skating rink. But by the end of March, the palace was melting away along with the hopes of Leadville. The thousands of visitors had spent very little.

Job spoke about the portion of the wicked with God, and the heritage of oppressors. They heap up so much, but it vanishes away and amount to nothing in the light of eternity. They may multiply wives, children and riches and build houses by robbing others, but they die and leave all behind. The terrors of God take hold on them when they are at the apex of their celebrations and they eventually go down to face the wrath and judgment of God. What vanity!

This does not in any way suggest that all who are rich are evil. The problem is about trusting in riches to the extent that one begins to disregard God and His word. People are concentrating on how to achieve their set objectives without including God in their plans. What they end up building is like the biggest ice palace in Leadville which eventually melted down together with the economic expectations and hopes of the town.

There is a void in the human heart that cannot be filled or satisfied with more drinking, smoking, partying and merriments; only God can. Therefore, you must not continue to ignore the inner promptings of the Holy Spirit calling you to repentance and newness of life in Christ.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
The emptiness in your life can only be filled by God Himself.
