TOPIC: When Delay Is Sin (DCLM Daily Manna 18 March 2021)

TEXT: Psalm 119:57-64 (KJV)

57CHETH. Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words.

58I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word.

59 I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.

60 I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.

61 The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law.

62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.

63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.

64 The earth, O LORD, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes.

KEY VERSE: “I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments” (Psalm 119:60).

MESSAGE:

In a letter to his son, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Dormer Stanhope, said, “I recommend you to the care of the minutes, for hours will take care of themselves… know the true value of time; snatch it, seize it, act promptly and no procrastination…” These words highlight the need to act promptly and never to procrastinate.

Our text, among other things, contains the testimony of the psalmist that he made haste and delayed not to keep the Lord’s commandments. This attribute vividly portrays a man whose heart is regenerated, who has made God his portion in life and eternity. He has a deep love for His laws and would not allow any circumstance or vicissitude of life to shake his faith in Him.

Even though robbers raided his farm, the psalmist was not discouraged; he remained steadfast in the faith. While sinners revelled during the night in sinful merriments, the psalmist would arise in the middle of the night to praise the Lord. Above all, he never went into any unequal yoke. He made friends only with those who loved and feared the Lord.

Like the psalmist, a believer should act promptly on God’s word without conferring “with flesh and blood” (Galatians 1:16). Sinners should hurriedly escape for their lives through repentance and faith in the blood of Christ and should no longer continue in the deceitfulness of sin. Backsliders should come back to the Lord and do all necessary restitutions before the door of grace is shut against them forever.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Procrastination is not in the language of those aiming for heaven.
