TOPIC: Covet God’s Mercy (DCLM Daily Manna 2 April 2022)

TEXT: Amos 7:1-6 (KJV)

1 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.

2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

3 The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord.

4 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.

5 Then said I, O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

6 The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God.

KEY VERSE: “The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.” – (Amos 7:6)

DCLM Daily Manna 2 April 2022 MESSAGE:

One night in 1935, Fiorello H. La Guardia, Mayor of New York, showed up at the night court in the poorest ward of the city. He dismissed the judge for the evening and took over the bench. One case involved an elderly woman who was caught stealing bread to feed her grandchildren. La Guardia said, “I’ve got to punish you. $10 or ten days in jail. As he spoke, he threw $10 into his hat. He then fined everyone in the courtroom 50 cents for living in a city “where a person had to steal bread so that her grandchildren can eat”. The hat was passed around, and the woman left the courtroom with her fine paid and an additional $47.50. It was the act of mercy on display.

God showed Prophet Amos two visions. The first showed a locust invasion of Israel’s fields at the time of the second harvest. The timing of this invasion was particularly bad because it was at the end of the growing season, which could lead to a severe famine because there would be no opportunity to plant again before the year ended. The second vision was about a devouring fire. In both cases, Amos pleaded for mercy with the excuse that the nation was too frail to bear the severe punishment; and God heeded because of His mercies.

Our God is very merciful. He could have brought these judgments suddenly without having to show Amos the visions. He is not bound to tell His servants everything He does.

God’s patience and mercy should not be taken for granted, or be seen as a licence to keep sinning. His patience is to allow sinners repent and return to Him.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Do not take God’s mercies for weakness.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Psalm 11-8
