TOPIC: Gravity Of Perversions (DCLM Daily Manna 21 October 2021)

TEXT: Deuteronomy 13:12-18

12 If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the Lord thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,

13 Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;

14 Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you;

15 Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.

16 And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the Lord thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again.

17 And there shall cleave nought of the cursed thing to thine hand: that the Lord may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and shew thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers;

18 When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the Lord thy God.

KEY VERSE: “Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.” – (Deuteronomy 13:15)

MESSAGE:

If you go by the familiarity with which evil is treated in our day, it will seem as if there is no more punishment for sin. Unfortunately for those who think so, God has not shifted ground. “Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished” (Proverbs 11:21). Neither can popularity nor longevity of sin reduce the fierceness of God’s wrath against sin and evil doers.

The extent of God’s displeasure at evil is manifest in His demand that any Jewish city that condoned perversion should be wiped out. God had warned them against the activities of false prophets and lawless people that might arise with the intent of luring them away from true worship. Capital punishment was prescribed for such perverts. They were told to resist and expose anyone (no matter how close they were) that would attempt to lead them away from God by lying, signs and wonders or secret enticement. The law that required the extermination of the inhabitants of a compromising city was for the Israelites and served to preserve their godly heritage. Because they did not strictly adhere to this, God punished such perversions by the sword of external aggressors.

Heaven-bound Christians have a duty to resist modern deceivers who, for selfish or satanic reasons, seek to lure people away from the truth. It does not matter if such are church members, friends or relations. Those who compromise with them share in their sin and stockpile divine wrath, which will eventually burst upon them.

God frowns at sin. But Christ Jesus had paid the price for our sins. Sinners who realise their sinfulness and helplessness, and place their faith in Christ get pardoned and transformed. But those who remain unrepentant and neglect the great salvation brought about by Christ’s atoning blood still stand in jeopardy.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
God’s final judgment is not arbitrary, but it has no room for appeal.
