TOPIC: God of Pleasant Surprises (II) (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Daily Devotional 11 July 2019)

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 1-3; Acts 17:1-15

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 9:1-7

MEMORY VERSE: “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.” – Malachi 3:1

The MESSAGE:

According to Psalm 126:1, our memory verse for yesterday, when God turns again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. The expression “we were like them that dream” indicates that the turning again of the captivity of Zion must have come to the people as a great pleasant surprise. Yesterday, we read about the story of a man at the Pool of Betheseda and saw why his healing was by Jesus, a pleasant surprise. We also read about the Jehovah Rohi’s intervention and provision of water for Hagar to feed Ishmael with as well as Jesus timely intervention and raising of the widow of Nain’s only son to life. I pray for you reading this devotional, the Almighty God will give you pleasant surprises, in the name of Jesus.

Today, we will examine another Bible character that experienced pleasant surprise from God. That Bible character was Mephibosheth. Note that in each of the preceding instances, the recipient or beneficiary did not expect the good thing (miracle) they received. Mephibosheth too never thought that king David would do him any good, having heard stories about the conflict between his grandfather and erstwhile king’s house and the house of David. In fact, Mephibosheth was taken into hiding in Lodebar for fear of being killed. So he never thought he would one day find favour with David. Mephibosheth must have been afraid when he was brought before David. However, the pleasant surprise was in what David said to him, “Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shall eat bread at my table continually.”

It was an unexpected blessing for Mephibosheth who probably had never heard of David’s friendship with his father, Jonathan in that he was only five years old when his father died. David gave to Mephibosheth as his inheritance the land Ziba was farming and Ziba and his sons would now work for him. Mephibosheth would be like one of the king’s sons. All these were pleasant surprises to Mephibosheth. When something like this happens, our praise and glorification should go to God, not to the man or woman God uses. This does not mean we should not thank the person God uses to show us unexpected kindness, but we must remember that it was God that touched the person and made him or her to favour and bless us. God is the source of life-changing pleasant surprises.

In all this, David was a type of Jesus, our Lord, who redeems, restores and returns us to our Father’s table in peace. Besides, for God to grant you pleasant surprises and unexpected kindness, all you need to do is to give your life to Christ Jesus, confess your sins and accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour. When you do, pleasant surprises and testimonies will be your every day experience. It does not matter whether you have health challenge like the man at the pool of Bethesda, God will grant you pleasant surprises. Even if you are handicapped like Mephibosheth or you are a widow or a single mother like the widow of Nain or stranded like Hagar, God will grant you pleasant surprises and give you a new song, in Jesus’ name.
