TOPIC: Love Is Not Self-Seeking (Seeds Of Destiny 4 April 2022)

SCRIPTURE: Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:7-8.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: One character of love is that love is not self-seeking.

Our anchor Scripture reveals that Love is a nature of God. And since we are made in the Image of God (Genesis 1:26-28), we are expected to love as God loves; we are supposed to love people as we love ourselves.

Now, one character of love is that love is not self-seeking.
1 Corinthians 13:5 says,
…seeketh not her own…
This means, love is not self-seeking.

Now, if we say, love is not self-seeking, what do we mean?

i. First, it means love is not self-centred
Love is not focused on self to the exclusion of others. Now, one of the places for the experimentation of love is marriage. A major problem in marriage is when people are seeking their own without caring for what concerns the other person.
There are men who don’t care about the welfare of their wives, and there are women who don’t care for the welfare of their husbands. To truly love, you must seek the welfare of the other person.

ii. Second, it means that love does not emphasize its own rights at the expense of the rights of others.
When we say love is not self-seeking, it means love does not emphasize its own rights at the expense of the rights of others. Remember that if you want your rights, another person also wants their rights. Love does not try to get his own rights at the expense of other people’s rights.

iii. Third, it means, love does not operate the “always-me-first mentality”
Love doesn’t operate the “Always-me-first mentality”. Selfishness operates like that. Love does not say, “Let me speak first before you speak. Understand what I am saying first. Shut up and understand me first”. That is not love.

Beloved, make up your mind to embrace the lifestyle of love. Don’t be self-seeking and you would look like your Creator.

Remember this: One character of love is that love is not self-seeking.

ASSIGNMENTS:

  1. Make up your mind to truly love people.
  2. Do not put yourself first to the detriment of others.

PRAYER: Thank You Lord for showing me the character of love. I receive the grace not to be self-seeking, but to be concerned about the interest and welfare of others, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

QUOTE: Bitterness and hatred are the opposites of love and forgiveness, and they are also the opposites of the Nature of God and of what God stands for. Culled from “AM I BITTER?” by Dr (Mrs) Becky Paul-Enenche.

DAILY BIBLE READING: 2 Chronicles 7-9.

AMAZING FACT: When a bee finds a good source of nectar, it flies back to the hive and shows its friends where the nectar source is by doing a dance which is called “Waggle Dance”.
Imagine the impact on earth if we can be selfless like the bees to share our findings with others.

PROPHETIC WORD/DECLARATION: Grace to love effortlessly and selflessly like the Creator is released upon you in Jesus’ Name.
