TOUGH JOB FOR THE TOUGH – PART 1
MEMORY VERSE: “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah” (1 SAMUEL 16:13)
BIBLE TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 16:10-13
David, the youngest of the eight sons of Jesse, was used to shepherding sheep alone in the field. He defended his sheep against ferocious animals, including lions. He was ruddy, rugged, talented and fearless. He became the choice of God as a replacement for Saul, the rejected king of Israel. As he was anointed by Prophet Samuel for the king’s office in the presence of his family members, David did not complain that he was unqualified. John L. Mason wrote, “It is the person who doesn’t need a boss that’s usually selected to be one.” David had a tough job of leading Israel as a king, involving: judging and guiding the people, going to battles with his army, and general administration. David performed well and God said of him, “…I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will” (Acts 13:22b).
Being appointed a prefect at school, a youth choir master in your church or a leader of a school club is also a tough job. If you do them with the fear of God and zeal, you will succeed.
QUOTE: David did not complain
CHALLENGE: Leadership is for the tough minded but God-fearing
PRAYER: Empower me to do my duties well, oh God
