JEALOUSY: SAUL EYES DAVID

MEMORY VERSE: “And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? And Saul eyed David from that day and forward” (1 Samuel 18: 8-9).

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 18:1-9

Benny Hinn once said that, “If you ever find the spirit of jealousy you’ll find the spirit of murder, anger, and rage.” Our passage today centres on Saul and David relationship. Saul, the king of Israel, became jealous of David after he defeated the giant, Goliath and gained popularity in Israel. Fearing that David would take his throne, Saul became envious of David’s accomplishments, which motivated him to repeatedly attempt to kill David.

The story teaches against the destructive power of jealousy and shows how it can lead to negative consequences. Allowing pride and feelings of insecurity to control us is dangerous – learn humility! To overcome jealousy, surrender your life to Jesus Christ, since “The cure for the sin of envy and jealousy is to find our contentment in God,” writes Jerry Bridges. Acknowledge and understand your feelings, practice gratitude and focus on what you have rather than what others have that you don’t. Challenge negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Learn to appreciate others’ success and build healthy relationships. Focus on your own goals rather than trying to compete with others.

QUOTE: Build healthy relationships.

PRAYER: God, remove ungodly feelings from my heart, free me from jealousy.

CHALLENGE: Practice gratitude and celebrate others’ success
