Good Is Not Good Enough

In My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers wrote, “The good is always the enemy of the best.” That is the truth. Good is not good enough. When we settle for good, we miss out on God’s best.

When you are desperate for a job, you will beat down doors to get there. When you are first hired, you arrive early and leave late. When you are passionate about what you do, productivity is at an all-time high. But after you’ve been working for a while, after you no longer have something to prove, after you’re no longer worried about keeping your job, you start to settle. You still do a good job, but you aren’t doing the best job.

What about in your marriage? How did you act when you were first trying to win the affection of your spouse? You probably showed them your best—your best outfit, your best jokes, your best home-cooked meal, your best pick-up lines, your best grooming habits. But now that you’ve been married a while, have you settled for good instead of best?

Unless you try to do something beyond what you’ve already mastered, you will never grow. You will never grow if all you do is sit back and rest in what you’ve already achieved.

It’s not enough to not quit. It’s not enough just to stay married. It’s not enough to do the bare minimum. If you want to have the best, you have to do more. Don’t settle for good enough. Keep striving for the best.
