 Your Workplace Matters

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16

Isn’t it interesting that when God sent His Son to the earth, He did not place Him in a priest’s home? You would think God would have put him in a religious atmosphere. He could have made him the son of a priest. But God didn’t do that. God put Him in a business atmosphere and made him a carpenter’s son. He was born into a businessman’s home to be raised by a carpenter. Jesus was not raised in a religious environment but in a business environment. Every time they sat down at the dinner table, they likely talked about how to build the business.

God wanted Jesus to know how to do business and work with excellence. It was God’s plan for him to deal with customers, orders, billing, lumber, hammers, nails, and working with His hands for 30 years. All that time, He never preached a sermon or worked a miracle. He just worked a common job.

God wants His people to rise up and be the church, not just go to church. He wants you to be the church in whatever field you work in. Jesus dragged His cross down the Via Dolorosa, which was the business district of Jerusalem. He didn’t take a back street. He dragged the cross down that road because He was saying, “I want My cross in the secular business world.” When you show up each day to work with the attitude of Christ and do each task the best you possibly can with enthusiasm, people will be drawn to you.

Be excellent in what you do, and be excellent in your attitude. And when you do, your light will shine. Matthew 5 said that you’ll be the light of the world. The people you work with don’t care about who your preacher is or your church, but they are watching you. Even if they never read the Bible, they are reading you. Those 30 years Jesus spent being a carpenter were not wasted, meaningless years. Your hours spent at your job matter to the people you are around each day. Revival starts with you living your everyday life in a way that shows the watching world the amazing love of Jesus.
