Persistence Pays

“You have not, because you ask not.” James 4:2

Luke 18 says, “Will God not hear those who cry unto Him day and night?” In the parable of the unjust judge, Jesus shared how this woman asked for the judge to make things right. At first he did not respond to what she said. There will be silent seasons in your life where it may seem like God is not listening to you. But this lady did what most others are unwilling to do. She went back over and over again until she wore the judge out. And he said (paraphrased), “I normally don’t do this, but because you won’t leave me alone, I will give you what you want.”

Abraham prayed six times for Sodom and Gomorrah. Six times he pleaded for God to spare the city, but because he could only find 10 righteous people God destroyed the city. But the Bible says that Elijah prayed seven times and the rain came. Six times Elijah had sent his servant to go outside and check to see if he saw any signs of rain and each time the servant would come back and say, “I don’t see anything.” Each time he would get that report Elijah would just go back to his prayer closet and on the seventh prayer, the boy came back and said, “I see a cloud.”

Do you ever wonder what would have happened if Abraham would have prayed one more time? Could it be that you are just one prayer away from seeing a miracle? Jesus taught us in the parable of the judge that we have to keep on praying and not give up. You have not because you ask not. Have you ever experienced your child asking for something over and over again until you eventually broke and gave them what they were asking for? Matthew 7:11 says, “So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him?” The Bible empowers us to come “boldly” to the throne of grace. (Hebrews 4:16) You are His child so don’t be timid in asking Him for what you need. Just as you delight in giving things to your children, so too does God.
