Weaving A Basket Of Faith

“Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and spoke, saying: ‘I will sing to the Lord…The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; He is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.’” Exodus 15:1-2

In Exodus 2, there is a story about the remarkable mother of Moses. This mother, Jochebed, faced a dilemma. Pharaoh had put out a decree that all of the male children, three years of age and under would be executed. Some would be killed by the sword but most of them, according to historical records, would be thrown into the Nile River to be eaten by the crocodiles, because the Egyptians worshiped crocodiles. They considered them gods.

Exodus 2:3 says, “But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.” Jochebed was a courageous and wise woman who made a basket that would protect her child from the crocodiles.

One of the ways that the crocodile destroys its victim is by twisting them. That’s what Satan is doing in this generation. He twists the truth and turns it into a lie. Today, the spirit of the world says, “The Bible is just a book. Everything that you were raised to believe is not true.” And the enemy has a way of “twisting” the truth into a lie and making the lie look like the truth, and the truth look like a lie! This generation is under heavy attack with false teachings and ideals. They are taught that they don’t have to accept the gender they were born with. They are taught that you should live with your boyfriend or girlfriend. The world sees marriage as just a piece of paper. Our kids and grandkids are taught that aborting a baby is their right because the child doesn’t matter. They are taught that God and the Bible are just fairy tales. Teachers try to convince them that the earth was created in a “Big Bang” collision and that there is no rhyme or reason for our existence. The spirit of the world is coming after your children.

But even though the Pharaoh had put out a decree to destroy Moses, the one thing that he had not counted on was the power of a godly mother. The scripture says that, “she took the bulrushes” – one translation says, “the reeds” – “and she made and weaved a basket, put slime and mud around it, so that it would be waterproof.” It could have been mother’s intuition because the material that she used to make that basket was made out of reeds. And the one thing that crocodiles don’t like for habitation is an area of reeds. It is a proven fact that crocodiles are allergic to bulrushes and it repels them.

Even though other mothers had accepted the fate of their children, Jochebed built something around her child that would protect him from the crocodiles once he was placed in the river. Other mothers may say, “The society that we’re living in is going to devour my child. The crocodiles of alcohol, sexual immorality, and peer pressure are too great. I just have to accept it. I just have to realize that it’s just the times that we’re in, and I don’t want to set the bar too high because kids today are going to be kids.”

Most of the mothers accepted the decree of Pharaoh that the crocodiles would get their kids but there was one mighty mother who said, “I will not accept that.” She had steel determination. She had something in her make up that said, “I am in a partnership with God for my child, and I’m going to build a basket that the crocodiles cannot penetrate!” God is calling all mothers to take a stand for their sons and daughters. He is calling you to weave a basket of faith around them to protect them from the influence of this world.
