The Seventh Sacrifice
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
You may wonder why you should get baptized? The first reason we get baptized is to follow the example of what Jesus has done for us. He died on the cross, was buried in a tomb, and then came out resurrected. In the same way, when you go under the water, your old man is being buried and then you emerge from the water with new life. So baptism is a picture, not only of Jesus but of you. You are saying that you were dead in your sins, but the old you has been submerged forever. As the water covers you, you are now covered in God’s grace.
The second reason we should get baptized is because Jesus commanded us to do it. In John 3:5, Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” You may think that because you were dedicated and sprinkled as a baby, you do not need to get baptized. However, the word baptize in the greek means “to dip under.” Jesus set the example and, at the age of 30, had John baptize him. Jesus, who was God in the skin, wanted you to know how important this act of obedience is for every believer.
The third reason to get baptized is to publicly declare to the world that you believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When you’re baptized, you acknowledge Jesus publicly. Matthew 10:32 says, “Whoever therefore confesses me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in Heaven.” Luke 9:26 says, “Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory…” If you have given your life to Christ, you should be excited to share that news with everyone you know.
Something interesting about the story of Noah’s Ark is that when the animals were brought aboard the ark, the clean animals were not loaded up in pairs, but there were seven of each kind. Every seventh clean animal of each kind was brought onboard to be sacrificed. That seventh animal was a type and shadow of Jesus Christ, the sacrificial Lamb of God! He was the sacrifice given for you. You don’t have to stay in the valley of guilt, shame, and condemnation. Jesus is the “seventh animal” that was prepared as a sacrifice for you, and He can still set you free!
So, if you have given your life to Christ but haven’t been baptized, take that step to celebrate your freedom with the world!
