Flies In The Ointment (Part 2)

“Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to Him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.” Hebrews 13:20-21

Ecclesiastes 10:1 tells us that we can get “flies in the ointment,” and what is supposed to be holy can be contaminated. Even though these “flies” are small, they can have a mighty impact. Galatians 5:9 says, “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the mosquito is the most deadly animal or insect in the world. It kills 1,000,000 people a year. It kills more than lions, grizzly bears, and poisonous snakes. A mosquito is just a tiny thing, but it is deadly. Some online articles talk about what would happen if the mosquito population was not controlled. It is predicted that health issues on apocalyptic levels would take place. Humans couldn’t go anywhere because they would overtake the outdoors. 

Sin and mosquitoes have something in common. They both want to take away the blood. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that draws us near to God. The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all unrighteousness and sin. And like a mosquito, the enemy is trying to remove the blood and bring disease and death to our families, marriages, children, and dreams.

In the state of Florida, Disney World draws millions of guests. It is a beautiful park, but it is built on a swamp. And the fascinating thing about Disney is that they have done an excellent job controlling the mosquito population. There are mosquitoes all around it, but for some reason, they are repelled from Disney property. This does not happen by accident. It is intentional. These resorts with 30,000 hotel rooms surrounding them have learned that if people are going to come to their properties, they have to be serious in dealing with this problem.  

Satan’s primary assignment is to remove the blood of Jesus from your life. You have to be intentional to fight against sin and temptation. At Disney, employees spray for mosquitoes twice a day. Exodus 29 gives the people instructions to lay the sacrifice on the morning and evening altar. What you do first thing in the morning and right before bed matters. Maybe you need to develop a habit of listening to the Word of God on the way to work instead of filling your mind with things that pull you down. At night, you need to reach for your Bible instead of your phone, so the last thing you meditate on will be thoughts of victory. There is a campaign against mosquitoes called “Fight the Bite.”

In the same way, you must have a mindset that is always on guard because an enemy is trying to infiltrate your life. That’s why you must diligently keep your family in church and prayer. Mosquitoes won’t leave on their own; you have to fight the bite.
