God Notices The Little Things

“He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands, he led them.” Psalms 78:70-72

God notices the little things.  When God sent the prophet Samuel to anoint a new king for Israel, he traveled to the house of Jesse, a farmer and sheep breeder in Bethlehem. Seven brothers were lined up, ready to be anointed King. Jesse, the father of David, had called for seven of his sons to come stand before the prophet. But he left David out because he was insignificant in his own father’s mind. Samuel said (paraphrased), “You have another one. I’m not going to anoint any of these seven. They look good. They look like they’re ready. But I already have somebody in mind out there in the field.” God notices things that others don’t. God didn’t first notice David when he slayed the giant. Psalm 78 said, “I saw David when he was following the ewes great with lamb.” (Pregnant sheep.) God said (paraphrased), “I noticed how, if a little pregnant sheep was struggling, he would just pick it up gently and tend to it. I want him to be the leader. I notice how he treats animals. He’s got a good spirit. He’s a hard worker and faithful to what I entrusted to him.”

God noticed Joshua when he was tarrying and praying in the temple in Exodus 33. God noticed that Joshua enjoyed serving in the temple. The other boys were in and out as soon as the service was over, but this little boy always wanted to stay in God’s house. He loved the temple and would often stay longer and linger there. God noticed that. God notices little things. He notices you in church worshiping when you could be somewhere else. He notices you reading your Bible each morning and praying when others just grab their coffee and go about their busy day. God said, “I can make a captain out of Joshua, and he can take the children of Israel into the promised land. I think I’ll use that little boy who loves to tarry in the temple.”

The Bible said the dove descended when Jesus prayed in the Jordan River. It was such an ordinary, common thing. He just prayed. The Holy Spirit descends when people pray. Every day, pray, “Our Father, which art in heaven hallowed be thy name.” Pray this little prayer over your meal every day, “Give us this day our daily bread.” When riding in your car, turn the radio off and say, “Lord, I love you today.” Before you go to sleep you ought to pray a little prayer of thanks for the day. It may only take 30 seconds, but the Holy Spirit descends anywhere there’s prayer.

God notices insignificant things. One time, Jesus told the disciples, “Push the boat out. I want to use your boat to preach.” All they did was push their boat out into the water. It may have seemed like a small thing to them, but they gave a platform to Jesus. You may volunteer at your church every week, whether it’s with the babies, teaching the children, cleaning the bathrooms, or running the sound. You may feel like nobody sees. But if God saw a couple of men pushing a little boat out of the sand into the water so Jesus could stand on the fishing boat and preach to the multitudes, then He can also see you working for His glory. God notices all the little things you do to make Jesus known to the world, and He’s proud of you
