The Power Of The Tongue

“The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire…” James 3:6

James gives four illustrations about the tongue. Number one, he says the tongue is like a bit in the horse’s mouth. Just as someone can control the direction of a powerful animal by a tiny bit, you can turn your whole life around if you get control of your tongue. You decide what direction you go with your words. Control your mouth; control the direction. Your tongue is so powerful that it can determine the entire trajectory of your life.

Then, James gives a second illustration. He says the tongue is like the rudder of a boat. Why is that important? Because when a boat gets out in a storm, you have to control the rudder. If the guide just lets the rudder go and doesn’t control it, the boat will wreck. When you get in the storms of life, you have to control what you say.

Thirdly, James said that a tongue is like a fire. “Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.” Your tongue can burn down your house, your marriage, your family, and your livelihood. Your tongue can cause damage that takes years to heal. Be careful what you speak over your spouse and your children.

Lastly, James said the tongue is full of deadly poison. When Isaiah got in the presence of God, the first thing he said when he fell at God’s feet was, “Woe is me. I’m unclean, I’m undone, and I’m a man of unclean lips.” So much of what we say is not in line with God’s word.

In the book of Joshua 6, the Bible said that they were about to take Jericho, and God gave the strangest commandment. He said for the next seven days; He didn’t want them to say anything. And then he said, “At the end of seven days, I want you to open your mouth and shout.” The people obeyed, and at the end of the seven days, when they shouted in victory the walls came crumbling down. Challenge yourself for one week not to confess one negative thing. Do whatever you have to do, but try to refrain from saying anything negative for seven days. At the end of the week, you will realize the power of the tongue. It truly sets the course of your life
