Distractions

“Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.” Psalms 119:37

1 Corinthians 7:35 encourages us not to be distracted. The scripture says, “And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction.” When Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water to Jesus, he was experiencing a miracle. But then he got distracted by the strong winds and he started to sink. Notice that it was not the devil or demons that distracted Peter. It was something so natural. The distraction was the wind. The enemy’s plan to limit you is to simply distract you with natural things.

Natural, everyday things such as paying the bills, getting the kids to activities, fixing the car, repairing the house can take over our lives and become distractions from our real purpose. In Luke 14, the master had prepared a huge meal and he sent invitations to everyone to come. And one man said, “I just bought some real estate and I have to go look at it, so I can’t come.” Another said, “I just bought five yoke of oxen and I have to train these animals how to plow the field.” Another man had just gotten married and said, “I would love to come, but I am busy now that I have a wife.”

The hindrance to these people coming to the master’s table was not terrible sin, demons or devils. It was busyness, materialism, and relationships that were given priority over Jesus. Many of us are so busy that God is an afterthought. You just don’t have time to do the will of God. Satan doesn’t need to send demons after you because many of you are so tied up in the things of this world that you don’t have time to focus on spiritual things.

Learn from Peter. Don’t lose your miracle and what God wants to do in your life because of distractions. It wasn’t the devil that stopped Peter from doing something amazing and impossible. It was just a natural, common distraction. God wants each of us to have unusual success, victories, and blessings but we have to keep our focus on Him.
