Why Get Baptized?

“Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…” Acts 2:38

There are two main reasons people don’t want to get baptized. The first reason is because they don’t feel it is necessary. They think, “I can be saved without being baptized in water,” and while that is true, this mindset is not obedient to the commandment of Jesus Christ. The first thing Jesus did in His earthly ministry was get baptized in water, and the last thing Jesus told us was to “go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28) In many other passages, we are commanded to be baptized in water. If it was so important that Jesus started his ministry by being baptized and ended His ministry by talking about baptism, we should take this command seriously.

Secondly, many people don’t want to get baptized because it is inconvenient. Did you know Jesus traveled 60 miles from Nazareth to the Jordan River to get baptized? It was not on His way or in His regular schedule, but He went out of His way to do the will of the Father. Sometimes, God doesn’t want your obedience to be convenient. Elisha told Naaman, an army commander, to get into the Jordan River and dip seven times, and his leprosy would be healed. But 2 Kings 5:11 says, “But Naaman went away angry and said, ‘I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.” But Elisha told him he needed to do it God’s way, and when he obeyed, “his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.” Your pride is killed when you have to step out of your comfort zone and do something inconvenient.

You may be hesitant to be baptized because you don’t think you need to or because it is inconvenient, but don’t let those excuses keep you from God’s will. When you do things God’s way, you will see His blessings. When you get married, you put on a wedding ring, signifying that you belong to that person. In the same way, getting baptized announces to the world that you belong to Christ. Baptism is declaring outwardly what has happened inwardly. This is a big moment in the life of a believer, so if you haven’t already been baptized in water, don’t wait any longer!
