Live Inside Out
“Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.” Matthew 23:26
God wants us to live inside out. When the prophet Samuel was told by God to anoint a new king over Israel he went to Jesse’s house. Jesse had seven sons and he brought out his oldest son saying (paraphrased), “Surely because of his stature, good looks, and leadership qualities this is the one who will be king.” But the Lord told the prophet, “Do not look at his appearance or physical stature because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the inner parts of us. In Psalm 103:1 King David said, “Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!” David was once criticized by his wife for dancing before the Lord with all his might. He was leaping, whirling, and worshiping with no shame and it embarrassed her. David responded to her saying, “I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes.” David was known as a man after God’s own heart. He was not concerned with what his outward appearance looked like because his inner love for God outweighed everything else.
If you are not careful, you can begin to grow outwardly but wither inwardly. You can look like a person who worships God at church and does all the right things but still be losing your passion for Jesus. But the more God blesses you outwardly, the more it should humble you inwardly. The more God entrusts you with, the more you should yearn for more of Him.
What you put in is what will come out. Jesus said, “That he that believeth on me, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38) You don’t have to fake it on the outside when you have something on the inside. If Jesus lives in you, praise should be as natural as breathing. Loving people and being kind should flow out of you because of what is in you.
