Spiritual Keys To Fasting

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1

When you hear the word “fasting” you may feel overwhelmed or intimidated. In this culture of entertainment, comfort, convenience, gratification, and pleasure it’s almost unheard of for people to sacrifice. Fasting has been lost in the body of Christ. Most churches don’t mention it anymore. But although fasting is not fun, it is powerful. Your faith will explode when you begin to fast.

Fasting is not just for “super-spiritual” leaders and pastors. Fasting is for ordinary people who realize they desperately need God in their life. Fasting is not a way to manipulate God into getting what you want. You cannot earn the blessings and favor of God. It is the grace of God and the blood of Jesus that release those blessings. Fasting simply gets your heart ready for whatever God is going to do. It humbles you and reminds you of the goodness of God. Fasting strengthens the bond of trust and reliance on God. Fasting is breaking out of the normal routine of life to seek after God. 

Fasting is an act of worship. You are presenting your body as a “living sacrifice.” When you fast try not to focus on the food you are not getting. Occupy your mind with God’s word and seek Him. There may be times you feel like quitting but Philippians 1:6 says, “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it…” If you start it, God will help you finish it. You are partnering with the Holy Spirit in this act of worship and He will give you the grace to see it through. 

Remember that when you fast, you must also pray. Fasting without praying is just going hungry for no reason. Fasting and prayer will heighten your spiritual alertness. Your Bible times will come alive. His plans will become clearer. You will grow hungrier for more of God as you are led more by your spirit man than your carnal man. Your love and longing for God will soar to new heights and you will cherish this special time with God.
