The Multiplication Blessing

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

In Genesis 1, before any human had been created, God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth.” Then He declared that it was good. Later, He commanded all the animals to multiply and fill the earth in the same way. Notice that the text said, “whose seed is in itself.” God had placed the seed and the potential for growth into each living thing.

God also created the potential to multiply in you. He loves to see you grow, expand, and become greater than how you started. That’s why the first blessing in the Bible was a multiplication blessing. It is not God’s will that you become stale and stagnant. It is His will that your joy, faith, and peace multiply. It is His desire for your family and business to grow. He wants everything you are involved in to become greater.

There is something in each of us that says, “I was born for more.” There is a desire inside of you that wants God to use your life in a powerful way. The seed is already in you. Everything great that God wants to do begins on the inside. We are always looking for miracles to come from the outside, but in 2 Kings 4, we see a remarkable story of a woman who finds out that God works from the inside out. God challenged this woman’s faith. She was in such debt that her sons were being taken away to be servants. The prophet showed up at her house right before they were to be taken away and asked her, “What do you have in your house?” She was probably thinking her provision would come from someone on the outside. Maybe some rich person would show up and pay off her bills. But the prophet said (paraphrased), “Get ready because God is going to multiply what you already have.” God wanted her to activate her faith by using what she already had.

The prophet told her to borrow as many vessels as she could find. Then, he commanded her to pour out what oil she had into the vessels. The oil continued coming out until all the empty containers were filled. God was teaching her that He blesses people who use what they have. What you have on the inside may look insignificant, but when you use what God has given you, He will multiply it in astounding ways.
