A Hunger Strike Against Hell

“‘Even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.’ Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love…” Joel 2:12-13

There are four things fasting can do this year in your life. Number one, it will bring a spirit of release. In Mark 9 the boy who was demon possessed went to the disciples and they couldn’t cast the devil out. When they watched Jesus do it they asked, “Why couldn’t we do it?” And Jesus said, “This kind comes out but by fasting and prayer.” There are certain spirits that will not release you or your loved ones until someone gets to business and starts fasting and praying. Isaiah 58 the fasting chapter of the Bible says, “The fast that I (God) decree will loose the bands of wickedness.” People who are bound in additions, sexual immorality, and who can’t control their flesh will be set free. When you fast the bands of wickedness start to break off of you and your “spirit man” begins to get stronger than the “flesh man.” 

The second thing that comes through fasting is a spirit of restoration. Joel chapter 2 says, “That when you proclaim a fast…I will restore the years the cankerworm and the locust have eaten.” The enemy has eaten up and stolen things from people’s lives. But a spirit of restoration of health, marriages, families, ministries, destinies, and missed opportunities will come when you fast. Another chance is coming to you.

Number three, there will be a spirit of reward released when you fast. In chapter 11, God said, “I am a rewarder of them who diligently seek me.” He is not talking about people who just come to church when it’s convenient, but He said, “I’m after people who will diligently seek me.” God said when you seek Him earnestly He will release a spirit of reward upon your life. Financial blessings and success will come to the people who will seek Him in fasting and prayer. In this new year don’t limit God!

Lastly, when we fast our priority shifts back to God. The TV sitcom show, “Friends” had 230 episodes and ten seasons. In 1994 the critics said that “Friends” was not very entertaining, clever, or original and that it wouldn’t make it. But what they didn’t know was there was a vacancy in our culture. People were wanting to be connected and the last episode of that show had 52 million people viewing it because people were longing for connection. People are longing for connection in any form. Fasting will connect you back to your Creator. You will realize that all you need is Him.
