He Holds the Chisel

MAR 24, 2024

Today’s Scripture

Ephesians 2:10, NLT

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Today’s Word

In the early 1500s, Michelangelo had a dream to sculpture King David out of a block of marble that stood over twenty feet tall. He worked tirelessly for two years, chiseling and shaping with great precision. When he revealed the finished sculpture, it was magnificent. Michelangelo said about how he accomplished this masterpiece: “I had a vision in my mind of King David, and I just kept removing everything that wasn’t him.”

That’s the way God is. He knows who we really are. He can see the masterpiece in us, and He’ll keep removing things that are not who we are. The impatience, the insecurity, the unworthiness. Chisel, chisel. That’s not who you are. The pride, arrogance, unforgiveness, and resentment. Chisel, chisel. They don’t belong on you. The limited mind-set and mediocrity don’t belong on you. The good news is that we have someone far greater than Michelangelo working on us. Our sculptor is the God who makes spectacular solar systems, magnificent mountain ranges, and amazing sunsets. He’s chiseling away everything that’s not the true you and making you His masterpiece.

Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are creating me as a masterpiece, down to the smallest detail of what I need to fulfill Your plan for my life. Thank You that You are chiseling and shaping and bringing me to completion. I believe that You are removing everything that is not the true me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
