For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified
The very first commandment instructs us to have no other gods before the one true God. In our culture, though, many turn aside to worship the idol of self.
Many sacrifice to the idol of significance. We thirst for status and to be known. We seek greatness – but from small motivations. Significance seeks to make our names known.
God is calling us back to a “Jesus sufficiency.” Like the apostle Paul, we must determine to know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Out of His great love for us, He laid down His life so we could find life in Him. There, we find our value and our worth.
His will becomes our priority. We must deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and lose our lives for the sake of Jesus and His gospel. Our death to self brings life to others.
In His kingdom economy, those who desire to be first will be a servant to all (Mark 9:35). He calls us to sacrifice…not significance. Sacrifice seeks to make His name known.
When we make Christ known, we share the one thing that we have to offer a hurting world. Nothing of ourselves will ease their suffering, deliver them from evil, or promise hope for tomorrow. We only have Jesus. And He is more than enough.
Blessing:
Heavenly Father, may I never have any other god before You. May nothing else ever compete for Your place in my heart. May I find all the recognition and significance that I need in You. May no sacrifice be too great to make You known. In the name of Jesus…amen.
