Hebrews 11:6

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

In every congregation or conversation with Jesus recorded in the Bible, three types of individuals emerge. The second type are those who are the convinced. They have seen God do some miraculous things. Through their own experience and observation, they are convinced that He is Who He claims to be and that He has true power to change their lives.

Multitudes of people followed Jesus from city to city. The crush of the crowd was overwhelming at times as people came to witness how His teaching challenged the spiritual leaders. They brought their sick friends and family members in hopes that this miracle worker would touch them and relieve their illnesses.

They were convinced that Jesus was a great Teacher. They marveled at the miracles that He performed. They were convinced of His ability to heal their diseases, to deliver from demons, and to comfort the afflicted. They were certain that He had come to rescue them, to set them free from oppression and bondage.

However, when Jesus taught a particularly difficult doctrine one day, John 6:66 tells us that many of His disciples turned away and no longer walked with Him. They were convinced, but they were not committed. There lies the problem with simply being convinced. In James 2:19, we learn that even the demons see and believe…and they tremble. But that conviction has not led them to serve Him or commit themselves to Him.

When a person leans on their own observations and experiences, that is shaky ground. Sometimes, what we see consists of a piece of the story. What looks like tragedy can result in our ultimate triumph. What looks like the impossible may be setting us up for a miracle.

When we move beyond the curious to the convinced, we believe that Jesus is Who He claims to be and that He can do what He has promised to do. That faith will propel us to take the next step to commitment. Faith without action is worth nothing, but faith that moves us to commitment leads to victory.

Blessing:

Heavenly Father, I am convinced that You are the Creator of all things, that You sent Your Son to die on Calvary to wash away my sins. Never let me stop at the head knowledge, but help me to embrace the heart knowledge. Let it transform my life and spur me on to commitment and action. Help me do Your will. In Jesus’ name… Amen.
