TOPIC: Divine Vengeance (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Daily Devotional 16 August 2019)

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 94-96; Romans 15:14-33

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Nahum 1:2-7

MEMORY VERSE: “And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?” – Revelation 6:10

The MESSAGE:

Vengeance is the infliction of injury, harm, humiliation, or the like in return for an injury or other offense received.

In working for God, believers must not be unmindful of the terrible consequences that results from despising the riches of His divine mercy and grace. Every Christian must be aware of the fact of retributive justice following a course of alienation or deviation from God’s ways.

The very love of God renders the punishment of the ungodly and the unfaithful absolutely essential. Some critics sometimes point to the scriptural teaching of the sinner in hell fire as indicating that God is unlovely and severe. But what they do not realise is that, where there is love in the Godhead, there will be found justice. God was described in an ancient hymn as “Infinite Justice, Infinite Love, and Infinite Truth, blended in one invisible ray of whitest light”, but many only comprehend the ‘Love and Truth’ in the character of the Divine without a due acknowledgement of the ‘Justice’ aspect of the Godhead.

We cannot consider only the love of God to the exclusion of all regard for his retributive character. Unfortunately, there is much of this doctrine or teaching of laxity in many churches today.

But what many fail to understand is that, as long as He is a righteous God, who has given His laws, statutes and commandment, He is also a just God, who expects His children to aim for perfection (Genesis 17:1). Deliberate and unrepented sins must of necessity be followed by appropriate consequences and results. Therefore, while joyfully proclaiming “the acceptable year of the Lord”, we must also declare the coming “day of vengeance of our God”. They are like two sides of a coin.

However, it must be stressed that “vengeance” means something very different when applied to man from what is intended when the same term is used in reference to God. Vengeance on the part of man means revenge, a determination of satisfaction on the injury done to a person; whereas the same word as applied to God is simply a pure desire that the cause of justice and rectitude be established and complete vindication secured.

The human form of revenge reckons with its victims at the earliest moment, but the godly vengeance delays and suffereth long, and considers that maybe, through penitence, the sinner might repent and the blow may not be required to fall at all. This is because He “has no pleasure in the death of the wicked”. (Ezekiel 33:11).

It is very important that we clearly understand that divine vengeance has absolutely no malice in it, and it is done only in the maintenance of righteousness.

In the light of the above, every believer must consider his or her ways. We must be careful the way we work for and walk with the Lord, as His vengeance will fall, not only on the wicked, but also on the unfaithful and the slothful believers. It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the Almighty God. That will not be your portion, in the name of Jesus.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
