The MESSAGE:
When you look closely at the football match, you can draw lessons useful for all of us that are participants in the game of life. Some are regulators like FIFA; some are referees and linesmen who officiate and direct the conduct of the match; some are players who run around the field looking for goals; others are spectators who watch the players but will never score any goal nor get a reward for being at the stadium. Each category plays its roles actively throughout the period of play.
The referees determine kick off time, half time, full time, extra time, final time, infractions, and penalty for infractions. The players themselves determine who wins and who loses according to the way they play and the number of goals scored. What is certain is that there must be a winner and a loser in every match which becomes obvious at the blow of the very final whistle. The regulators set the maximum time for each match and extension of time when necessary. Every other person is allowed to wear a wrist watch and monitor the time left for the match to end except the players.
The players get into the pitch and play their hearts out knowing that even though they do not know the exact second the game would end and the whistle blown, they are conscious of the fact that the game will definitely end when the one holding the time blows the whistle. It is only after the referee’s whistle has sounded that people weep or jubilate. They cry and gnash their teeth because it’s all over! The game is over and the time is up! They weep because when the video of the game is played after the match, they see missed opportunities, missed scoring chances, but by that time, there is nothing they can do to make amends. The time is up, the game is over! Those who celebrate do so because they won the match and were adjudged deserving of the much contested trophy.
We can liken the above scenario to our race on earth. We are on the pitch of play called life, and even though we all wear man-made wrist watches, they are not useful beyond assisting us to guide our daily activities and give us a sense of timing. The One who holds the real time is watching us play our game on the pitch of life. He has set the rules of the game and holds the whistle too. As we play, some get warning by mere signs, some get yellow card, some get red card, while others manage to finish the match fully exhausted. When the time of the match is considered over, He will blow the whistle and the game will be over for all. Winners and losers will emerge and rewards will be given to deserving players. No more contest but everyone will be rewarded as considered necessary. The mystery of the scenario is that spectators will definitely get no reward. Players may one way or the other manage to get some reward even though they were not the very best.
God determines when the time starts and ends for each of us. Some of us have just begun, some are at half-time break, while some of us have long returned from our half-time break. Some may perhaps be in their extra time trying to hit the goal desperately. Whatever your state is, keep your eyes on the goal post because the One with the wristwatch and whistle will soon end this game. What would be your fate at the final blow of the whistle? Would you be celebrating or gnashing your teeth? Play your game well now.
