The MESSAGE:

In this time and age when many people are having unpleasant experiences of unfaithfulness, disloyalty and incorrigibility with their domestic servants and staff at work, Eliezer of Damascus stands out as a shining example of a dutiful and unfaithful servant. We all need to learn some lessons from this rare personality.

The first attribute of Eliezer we all should learn from is that he was spiritually mature and discerning. First, Abraham made him to swear an oath of doing exactly as he was told. He agreed to the oath and followed it up with unstinted devotion to duty. That was why he got a great result. Having lived with Abraham for so long, he understood spiritual principles and worked with them to his advantage. He did not belittle the oath and the consequences of failing to fulfil it. He did not abuse the privilege the patriarch gave him. He believed in the God of his master, Abraham, prayed to that holy God and succeeded in his assignment.

Eliezer understood his assignment to get a wife for Isaac, his master’s son, from his country and kindred. Abraham made him swear he would not get a wife from among the Canaanites. In getting Isaac a wife, Eliezer followed all the instructions that Abraham gave him. The Bible says that he took ten out of the camels of his master and travelled to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. One important characteristic of a good servant or employee is obeying and carrying out simple instructions. This appears to be grossly missing among servants and employees today.

Abraham prayed for Eliezer before he embarked on the journey, “The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house.” (Genesis 24:40). Eliezer did not lean on his own understanding; he acknowledged God and depended on Him for success in his mission. He prayed for heaven’s assistance, “O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and show kindness unto my master Abraham.” His approach paid off.

What were the results of both prayers? First, the LORD led Eliezer to the house of his master’s brethren. The signs and indications he told God to use in proving the right woman to take as wife for Isaac also worked out successfully. With divine ease, God directed Rebecca to the well at that time and she offered to give Eliezer as well as the camels water. Second, God gave Eliezer favour in the sight of Rebecca, who led him to her family as well as great favour with Rebecca’s father, Bethuel, as well as Rebecca’s siblings and relatives. Eliezer was a good public relations officer. He was a good ambassador. He represented his master very well.

Finally, when he had succeeded in getting Rebecca to become Isaac’s wife and she was ready to go with him, Eliezer worshipped God who made his achievement possible. The Bible says he bowed down his head and worshipped the LORD God of his master, Abraham, who showed him the right way to get Abraham’s brother’s daughter for his son (Genesis 24:48).
