The MESSAGE:
Man would have naturally prosper, excel and be fulfilled in all things if he could reverence, trust and depend on God the way children trust their parents for daily need. On the contrary, ignorance and the fear of tomorrow have caused man to be entangled in actions that make him move in vicious cycle and most often, to a standstill and despair sooner than later. Nevertheless, God wants us to prosper in all areas of our endeavours. The Bible clearly tells us that “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments” (Psalm 111:10). A Christian must therefore involve God and follow godly principles in the handling of personal or family funds. Being the giver of every good gift, it is wise to first thank God for every income or gift, fulfil the first responsibility to God in tithes, offerings, first fruits, sowing seed etc. This is certainly not burdensome for a believer who considers all the benefits that go with such obedience. The next wise step is to prayerfully draw up a budget based on meeting the needs of our family for food, shelter, health, education, raiment, utility bills, etc. God is pleased when we make our family happy but it is unwise to indulge and spoil our children by giving them everything they want. Next, care for our parents, the poor and the needy within our extended family, friends and those around us.
As good citizens, we must as a necessity pay our tax as and when due. As an employer of labour, the wages of people working for us must be part of our budget and paid timely too. God is not pleased when such monies are delayed, invested or used to solve other problems by the employer (James 5:4). Unity and transparency in handling and spending family budget is a necessity for couples if mismanagement, wastage and conflict must be avoided. There is no wisdom in engaging in unplanned spending, spending above your earnings, or buying on credit even when you are expecting some money.
It is also very important that we invest or gradually save money, no matter how little it may be, to meet expected and unexpected needs that may arise from time to time. Never wait until you have a huge sum, save as you earn. A Christian must never love or worship money to the point of ignoring responsibilities. If God indeed is our Shepherd, we must rest on Him and follow godly principles in handling our money, and we shall not be in want, in Jesus’ name.
