FIRE SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 12:14-18 (KJV)

14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

MFM Devotional For Today 2024 MESSAGE:

Bitterness means to exhibit an intense animosity, hostility or resentment. It is caused by expressing of severe pain, grief or regret. Bitterness is a negative emotion and, as such, contrary to our well-being. Someone rightfully put it this way: “It’s like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” In other words, exercising bitterness is literally hurting yourself. In most of the cases, the object of your bitterness may be oblivious to your acrimony against him or her, thereby going about their own business without any problem while you are still hurting.

Ephesians 4:26-27 says, “Be angry, and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” Naturally, one could get angry at certain issues; but allowing the anger to linger on leads to bitterness. When bitterness comes in, any other vice could set in such as hatred, malice, enmity, even murder. It was bitterness that made Cain to kill his younger brother, Abel, “And Cain talked with his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him” (Genesis 4:8).

God has made His grace available to comfort us when we are hurt. It is left to us to either accept or refuse that grace. Refusing it creates an enabling environment for bitterness to grow. Everyone at some point in life experiences being hurt by another. Then the need arises to choose whether to forgive or to dwell upon the hurt until bitterness sets in. In essence, bitterness is a choice.

When a root of bitterness springs up, it not only destroys one’s inner peace, but can also cause physical illness. Bitterness defiles all those it touches, starting with the person who is bitter, then extending to other relationships. Most importantly, the embittered person becomes enslaved to his or her target of bitterness.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING

  1. Father Lord, I thank You for Your Word.
  2. Lord, forgive me all my sins and shortcomings, in the Name of Jesus.
  3. I receive grace to forgive those who have wronged me, in the Name of Jesus.

EVENING

  1. O Lord, give me a pure heart devoid of bitterness, in the Name of Jesus.
  2. O Lord, give me a heart full of love and compassion, in the Name of Jesus.
  3. Lord, let Your joy overflow in my heart, in the Name of Jesus.
  4. Peace of God like a river, begin to flow in my life, in the Name of Jesus.
