TOPIC: Lessons From The Life Of Lot (1) (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Devotional 22 June 2024)

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 42, Psalms 43, Psalms 44, 1 Corinthians 4, 1 Corinthians 5

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Genesis 13:7-12 (KJV)

7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

MEMORY VERSE: “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;” – 2 Peter 2:6 (KJV)

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES:

THE VEIL OF DARKNESS BLOCKING YOUR VISION SHALL CATCH FIRE, IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

MFM Devotional For Today 2023 MESSAGE:

Today, the train of our devotional is taking us to the life of Lot. We shall examine the life of this Bible character and glean some lessons from it.

Lot was the Son of Haram and nephew of Abraham (Genesis 11:27). On the death of his father, he was left in charge of his grandfather Terah (vs 31), after whose death he accompanied his uncle Abraham, into Canaan. They went to Egypt and back again to Canaan (Genesis 12:5, 10, 13:1). After this, Lot separated from Abraham and settled in Sodom (Genesis 13:5-13).

There, his righteous soul was ‘vexed’ from day to day (2 Peter 2:7) and he had great cause to regret this act. Lot, in Hebrew, means a covering or veil. He didn’t see as God sees (1 Samuel 16:7). Lot saw only the rich grassy valley that seemed promising for his future. God, however, saw the people of Sodom who were wicked… exceedingly. Lot’s failure to discern, recognise and avoid danger or satanic operation eventually led to his death and tragedy in his family.

Therefore, the first lesson to learn from Lot’s life is that he failed to recognise and avoid evil. This brought problem to his household; and till today, his life is an evil reference point. The father who refused to stand as the priest, prophet and watchman over his household will eat regret for dinner. That was what exactly happened to Lot.

Another lesson to learn from the life of Lot is that he seemed to love personal gain more than his hatred for Sodom’s wickedness. Verse 10-13 of our Fire Scripture affirmed this. If he had been more determined to do what was right, he would not have put up with the evil in Sodom and he certainly would not have chosen to live there. Perhaps he felt that Sodom’s beauty, wealth and cultural advantages outweighed the risks to himself and his family forgetting the Bible’s warning or admonition: “Be not deceived; evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33). He made a costly mistake by remaining in Sodom, thereby learning their ways.
