TOPIC: Lessons From The Life Of Mordecai (I) (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Devotional 9 June 2023)

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Job 42, Psalms 1, Psalms 2, Acts 20, Acts 21

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Esther 2:5-12 (KJV)

5 Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;

6 Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.

7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.

8 So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king’s house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.

10 Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew it.

11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women’s house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.

12 Now when every maid’s turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)

MFM Devotional For Today 2023 MESSAGE:

Let us give a little background of the setting of this story before we continue. After the Babylonian Empire was defeated and replaced by the Persians in 539 BC, the centre of government for the Jewish exiles transferred to Persia. Earlier, the Babylonians had conquered and exiled the Jews throughout their empire (2 Kings 24:1). Babylon, also called the Neo-Babylonian Empire, broke the supreme ruling power of Assyria and controlled the world from 605-539 B.C.

The Babylonian Empire lasted about 70 years. It was the same seventy years of Judah’s captivity. Babylon was finally ruled by King Cyrus of Persia (539 BC), who allowed the Jews to return to their home land. The setting of the story of Esther and her uncle Mordecai is the city of Sushan, the Persian capital. It took place during the reign of King Ahasuerus (his Hebrew name).

Mordecai was Esther’s adoptive father, mentor, confidant and cheerleader who stood for the rights of their Jewish community. The life of Mordecai might seem secondary in the extraordinary story of Esther in the Bible, but he was more than just her uncle. He welcomed her as his own daughter. He was instrumental in ensuring the safety of not only Esther and the Jewish people, but of exposing treachery in the kingdom of King Ahasuerus, Esther’s husband. His actions within Esther’s life story in the Bible characterised attributes that we can relate to or wish we embraced more of in life. The first lesson here is that he was a loving and accommodating man. He did not cast Esther away when her parents died. We know what is happening in many societies these days. When parents die, their family members will take over properties and neglect the children of the deceased. They will neglect the children and subject them to deprivation and suffering. Conversely, Mordecai loved Esther like his own daughter and brought her up like one. God is watching how you treat others.
