MEMORISE: And he said O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. Genesis 24:12

READ: Genesis 24:12-14

12 And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.

13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:

14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.

MESSAGE

I Abraham’s chief servant promised his master that he would go to Abraham’s hometown to get a wife for Isaac. He set out on the journey, and as he approached his destination, he stopped to pray, pleading for God’s favour. He said, “I pray thee.” Some other Bible versions translate this as “Please.”

The word ‘please’ is used to express politeness when making a request. When you’re asking God for anything in prayers, be polite and courteous. Don’t go to God in prayer being pompous and demanding. James 4:6 says that God resists the proud, but He gives grace unto the humble.

Whenever I pray, I say, “Father, please give me so and so…please do this for me because I know you are my Father, and you would not withhold any good thing from me.” Similarly, when you want to make a request from your parents, friends, colleagues, siblings or neighbours, even if you are entitled to that thing, it is important to still say words like ‘please’, ‘could you’, or ‘please, may I have this?’ When you do this, people will know you are a child who has good manners.

KEY POINT
Pride hinders a lot of things; be humble, even in prayers.

HYMN 13 – Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior

1 Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
Hear my humble cry,
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Refrain:
Savior, Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

2 Let me at a throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief;
Kneeling there in deep contrition,
Help my unbelief.

3 Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.

4 Thou the Spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee?
Whom in heav’n but Thee?

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 1 Samuel 8:1-9:27 John 6:22-42
