READ: Luke 19:1-10

  1. And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
  2. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
  3. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
  4. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
  5. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
  6. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
  7. And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
  8. And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
  9. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
  10. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalms 90-92, Romans 11:1-36

MESSAGE:

In todays Bible reading, we see a short rich republican named Zacchaeus. He was so short that he could not see Jesus because of the crowd, until he climbed a tree. He was physically limited by his stature; in a crowd, he would be unnoticed. Are you swallowed up in a crowd? Are you under-performing in your academics even after several hours of serious study? I decree that you will stand tall amongst others from today in the mighty name of Jesus.

To stand tall or standout, you must seek knowledge; find out what those ahead of you are doing and strive to do better. Don’t be satisfied with little achievements because there is always room for improvement. In addition, don’t give room for discouragement from people or friends. In 1 Samuel 17:26-28, David’s brothers tried to discourage him from staying on the battlefield but he refused to listen to them because he was sure of his capabilities. He didn’t leave until he met the right person, King Saul, who gave him an opportunity to shine. You too can stand tall.

KEY POINT:

To stand tall, move higher in your relationship with God.

HYMN: I’M PRESSING ON THE UPWARD WAY

  1. I’m pressing on
    the upward way,
    New heights I’m gaining
    every day;
    Still praying as I onward bound,
    “Lord, plant my feet
    on higher ground”.

CHORUS
Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith on heaven’s table-land;
Where love and joy
and light abound,
Lord, plant my feet
on higher ground.

  1. My heart has no desire to stay,
    Where doubts arise
    and fears dismay;
    Though some may dwell
    where these abound,
    My constant aim
    is higher ground.
  2. Beyond the mist
    I fain would rise,
    To rest beneath
    unclouded skies,
    Above earth’s turmoil
    peace is found
    By those who dwell
    on higher ground.
  3. I long to scale
    the utmost height,
    Though rough the way,
    and hard the fight,
    My song while climbing shall
    resound
    Lord lead me on
    to higher ground.
  4. Lord lead me up
    the mountain side,
    I dare not climb
    without my Guide;
    And heaven gained,
    I’ll gaze around,
    With grateful heart from higher
    ground.
