TOPIC: Shed The Weight [Open Heaven for Teens 11 August 2022]
MEMORISE: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1
READ: Mark 4:18-19
- And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
- And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Romans 11:1-36, Psalms 90-92
MESSAGE:
Weights are not necessarily sins but distractions that are capable of slowing one down or making one lose focus on the race to Heaven. As a former athlete, I can assure you that the lighter you are, the faster you would run. This is why you can hardly see an obese athlete competing in a race.
In today’s Bible reading, deceitfulness of riches and cares of this world are examples of weights shown to us. You must not allow the love of money take over your heart to a point where you begin to seek it at all cost. The craze for money is increasing every day and has found its way into the Church, too. Some workers in the Church cannot do anything voluntarily in the house of God anymore. They request to be paid by the Pastor for any service rendered. This was not so in my younger days, when we preferred to spend and be spent for God. We sold our cars, property, left our comfort for the sake of the gospel but the reverse seems to be the case today. If your sole pursuit in life is to make money, you’re gradually gaining excess weight. If your zeal for evangelism, follow-up and making impact is giving way to greed or wealth acquisition, then you should check yourself. Check your motive for wealth and if it doesn’t align with the will of God, drop it.
PRAYER POINT:
Father, please let nothing derail me from making it to Heaven, in Jesus name.
HYMN: I’m Pressing On The Upward Way
- I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher
ground”.
Chorus:
Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith on heaven’s table-land;
Where love and joy and light abound,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
- My heart has no desire to stay,
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where
these abound,
My constant aim is higher ground. - Beyond the mist I fain would rise,
To rest beneath unclouded skies,
Above earth’s turmoil peace is found
By those who dwell on higher ground. - I long to scale the utmost height,
Though rough the way, and hard the fight,
My song while climbing shall resound
Lord lead me on to higher ground. - Lord lead me up the mountain side,
I dare not climb without my Guide;
And heaven gained, I’ll gaze around,
With grateful heart from higher ground.
